January 2004: Getting the Most out of People

Many thanks to Suzanne Hart from Genzyme for providing a great meeting place for our meeting. The meeting room was very accommodating and the food and beverages were fantastic.

Kat Baillie, ITTC Chair, gave an update on ITTC. ADAPT members can get a discount on their conference registration if they register by May 1, 2004. Register today and attend the best kept secret in the Northeast! Why should you attend ITTC? Well, no better reason than to gain knowledge; to see the emerging training technologies; to learn about the latest adult learning methods; to network with hundreds of your peers; to meet and have a chance to interact with nationally-known experts; and to see the latest products and services offered by leading IT training vendors.

In our continuing theme of "Unleashing Potential," our speaker this month, Ted Gorski, President and Chief Effectiveness Officer at Get Your Edge in Hollis, NH, presented us with success stories and tips for "getting the most out of people." During this dynamic group interaction, we explored:

  • The struggle between management and employees - current climate vs. employee reality
  • What is motivation and how it works
  • Five secrets on motivating individuals
  • Discovering the various communication styles and leveraging them for effectiveness

We learned that to drive performance, we need to provide (1) Motivation, (2) Ability, and (3) Opportunity - or, MAO for short. Five ways to improve employee performance are (1) Strengths, (2) Needs, (3) Feedback, (4) Dealing with Failures and Successes, and (5) Self-Awareness.

ADAPT members present were offered a free on-line evaluation by providing their business cards to Ted. Thanks, Ted!
