Session Description:

Modern computer based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has been in use for approximately 40 years. GIS was developed for use in the environmental management, resource planning, and asset management fields.

The use of GIS has traditionally been limited to technologically skilled specialists with advanced computer training.
Recent advances in technology have helped push GIS into the mainstream of our society. There is a new spatial awareness in our daily consumption of news and in our business practices that has been made possible through the use of GIS. It is very common now to see GIS used by the media to present demographic, and political information to us though interactive mapping. Access to current aerial and streetscape photography is available through Google Maps. Spatial information is used regularly by most of us with nothing more than a web browser and a connection to the internet.

Nat Norton will present and demonstrate examples of current GIS technology that is intended for mainstream consumption by non-technical casual computer users. The presentation will focus on web based GIS applications.
